Electricity Saving Tips
Electricity saving starts at home and in the workplace. By making small, mindful changes in how we use power, we not only lower monthly bills but also reduce pressure on the grid and protect the environment. Whether it’s switching off appliances, choosing energy-efficient lighting, or planning usage during off-peak times, every step counts toward a more sustainable future.
Use Power Responsibly!
Television
- Always remember to switch off your television set on the TV itself and NOT on the remote.
- Do not leave your cell phone charger in the circuit if not in use.
- Unplug your laptop before going to bed.
Refrigerator
- Open refrigerator/ freezer doors only when necessary.
- Ensure that door seals are intact.
- Switch off the fridge when it is empty or when going on holiday.
- Let hot food cool down before placing it in the refrigerator.
- De-ice the freezer regularly.
- Leave space between items on shelves, this allows cool air to circulate more easily.
- Keep freezers frost free will save you power and money.
- Do not overstock your free – it blocks air flow.
Light Bulb
- Replace conventional bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs were possible
- Always switch off lights when they are not needed.
Iron
- Use a thermostatically controlled iron that switches itself off when the correct temperature is reached.
- Switch an iron off once it has reached the correct temperature and complete the ironing on stored energy.
- Use distilled water in steam irons.
- Do NOT iron on soaking wet clothes.
- Do not leave the iron on if you are not using it at that time.
- Iron low temperature fabrics first to reduce warm-up time.

- Be in control of your electricity consumption.
- Lower rates.
- No electricity bills.

Kettle
- Only boil the amount of water that you need.
- Keep your kettle’s element clean of chlorine build up, by boiling vinegar diluted in water at least once a month.
- Use a flask to keep your water hot.
Washing Machine
- Soak your clothes first.
- Use cold water supply.
- Run the machine only when there is a full load.
- Do not over-wash clothes.
- Clothes that need a light cleaning don’t need to be washed as long as dirty work clothes.
- Use the proper setting for the type of clothes you’re washing.
- If they are delicate or knit, use the setting offered rather than the “regular” setting. This will use less energy and the clothes will last longer.
- Locate your washing machine as close to the water tank as possible. The shorter distance, the less amount of heat loss in the pipes.
- Don’t put in more laundry detergent than you need.
- A front loader washing machine uses less water and cost less to operate.
Stove
- Use a pressure cooker when preparing food that normally takes a long time to cook.
- Consider buying a stove with a convection oven.
- Use the right size pot for the right size stove plate.
- Use cooking utensils with flat bottoms and tight covers.
- Don’t use a stove to light a cigarette.
- Never use the stove or hot plate as heaters.
Geyser
- A geyser accounts for up to 40% of your electricity bill.
- Ensure that your thermostat is set to no more than 55 Degrees Celsius.
- Wrapping your geyser in an insulating blanket can cut power consumption by half.
Heater
- Electric heaters that are controlled by thermostats are more energy efficient.
- Oil filled heaters are the safest.
- Only heat rooms that are occupied.
