The 22nd Annual Conference of AFUR commenced yesterday, Monday, 23 March 2026, in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region, and will continue until Friday, 27 March 2026. The event is being held under the theme, “Innovative Technologies for Inclusive and Resilient Utility Regulation,” highlighting the role of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital transformation, big data, cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and geospatial technologies in ensuring equitable access to energy, water, and sanitation, transport, and maritime sectors. More than 25 countries from across the African continent are attending the event.
AFUR addresses regulatory matters across the energy, telecommunications, transport, and water and sanitation sectors, with a strong focus on cross-sectoral issues. Its goal is to foster cooperation among utility regulators across Africa, thereby strengthening the continent’s growth and socio-economic development. AFUR’s mission is to promote effective utility regulation and support Africa’s infrastructure development.
Speaking at the conference, the Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Honourable Modestus Amutse, urged regulators to remain agile and adaptable in a rapidly changing environment. He called on them to prioritise cybersecurity and data protection, promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across borders and sectors, and ensure that innovation is balanced with inclusivity and accessibility.
The conference is expected to generate valuable insights for the future of utility regulation in Africa. It also reflects the continent’s shared commitment to innovation and resilience in service delivery. Erongo RED is also attending the event and is honoured to form part of this important continental gathering.
