A major milestone for energy infrastructure in the Erongo Region was reached with the official inauguration of the Sekelduin Substation, located on the outskirts of Swakopmund next to the B2 road, on Monday, 22 June 2026.
The approximately N$394 million investment marks a significant step towards enhancing electricity supply reliability, expanding network capacity, and supporting the region’s growing economic development needs.
Deputy Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Hon. Gaudentia Kröhne, said the Sekelduin Substation reflects Government’s commitment to strengthening electricity supply and supporting regional distributors such as Erongo RED. She added that the project enhances energy security, promotes reliable and sustainable power, and supports future renewable energy integration.
Erongo RED Chief Executive Officer, Mr Immanuel !Hanabeb, described the project as a demonstration of the value of collaboration. “The successful completion of the Sekelduin Substation is a testament to what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to national development,” he said.
Building on this emphasis on partnership and long-term infrastructure development, NamPower Managing Director, Mr Kahenge Haulofu, highlighted the investment conditions required to sustain projects of this nature. “A predictable regulatory environment and cost-reflective tariffs remain essential to enabling prudent, long-term investment in infrastructure of this nature,” he said.
The Sekelduin Substation will strengthen the connection between NamPower’s transmission network and Erongo RED’s distribution system, contributing to Namibia’s long-term electricity security and economic development.
The inauguration was attended by members of the Boards of Directors of both utilities, industry leaders, employees, contractors involved in the project, and representatives of the media.
